A fierce fire broke out in a chemical company on Friday morning at Kurkumbha MIDC in Dawood taluka of Pune district. An official said no one was injured in the incident.
On receiving the information, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potfod said, several fire tenders were sent to the spot at Kusum Distillation and Refining Private Limited Company to reduce the flames.
“The blast occurred at around 10.30 am. Water tankers were taken to the scene and the fire was extinguished. According to the news agency PTI, a cooling operation is currently going on according to an official.
The incident came to light after a loud noise was heard in the area. The flames and smoke, which were seen billowing from the office premises, created panic-like conditions in the area for a while.
The official said drums containing acetone and ethanol were housed in the plant.
“As the fire spread, those drums caught fire and exploded. A thick black smoke balloon surrounded the area after the blast. No one was injured in the incident as the plant was closed, ”he said.
Police have sealed the area and barricaded some places to avoid the mob.
Taking to Twitter, Baramati MP Supriya Sule said: “Kusum Rasayana is on fire at Krischum MIDC. I spoke with Sri. Naval Kishore Ram-Pune District Collector. The administration has started relief work. I am monitoring the situation and coordinating relief measures with the administration. I appeal to all citizens not to panic. “
